Title: Extreme Aerodynamics: Beyond the Envelope
Abstract Summary:
This talk examines flight in extreme aerodynamic conditions—such as the turbulent wakes of urban canyons, mountainous terrain, and ships—that pose severe challenges for small-scale aircraft due to large gust disturbances occurring on timescales comparable to flow instabilities. Using computational and physics-embedded machine learning methods, Dr. Taira’s group has found that these extreme flows are surprisingly low-dimensional with similarities across a wide range of Reynolds numbers, enabling the development of fast-acting flow control and optimal wing designs to suppress transient loads.
