About
Barbara L. Jackson devoted her career to opening doors, especially for scholars of color seeking a place in the professoriate and in educational leadership. Today, the Jackson Scholars Network bearing her name has shaped generations of leaders. In this keynote, Frank Hernandez, PhD, a member of the inaugural cohort of Jackson Scholars and a longtime Jackson Scholar mentor and dean of education at Texas Christian University, reflects on what it means to build a legacy rather than simply inherit one. Drawing on his research on Latino school leaders, leadership for social justice, and educator sexual misconduct, as well as his leadership of national and state organizations, Hernandez shares evidence that mentoring changes careers and institutions. He invites school leaders, teachers, and counselors to consider how they can widen the circle that Jackson began, including for LGBTQ educators and students, and what legacy they are building through their daily work.
