QSET: From the Ground Up
Research on superconducting quantum devices is inherently multidisciplinary, spanning materials science, device physics, microwave engineering, and quantum control. In this talk, I trace the development of the Quantum Science, Engineering, and Technology (QSET) laboratory at Northwestern University, from an empty room to an active research laboratory in superconducting quantum circuits. I discuss my contributions to developing the measurement infrastructure and fabrication processes, with an emphasis on the experimental challenges involved in designing, characterizing, and controlling superconducting quantum devices. I also highlight collaborative studies carried out at QSET over the years to understand how materials, fabrication processes, and interfaces affect superconducting device performance. Finally, I present our work on heralded quantum entangling gates in a modular superconducting platform, bringing together chip design, microwave packaging, and quantum control.
