About
Felt Stories is a collaborative program between Residential Academic Mentors (RAMs) and the Cross-Cultural Center designed to help first-generation college students explore and celebrate their cultural identities while building a sense of belonging on campus. The program will begin with a short presentation about cultural identity, representation, and the importance of embracing the experiences and backgrounds that shape who we are. Students will then create their own felt pennants using different colors, symbols, and images that represent their culture, traditions, values, or personal experiences. Through this creative activity, students will have the opportunity to reflect on their identities, connect with fellow first-generation students, and celebrate the diversity within their community.
• Residents will identify personal, cultural, or family influences that contribute to their identities.
• Residents will explore ways to express and celebrate their cultural identities through visual art and symbolism.
• Residents will recognize the value of cultural diversity and community connections in fostering a sense of belonging as first-generation college students.
The purpose of Felt Stories is to create an inclusive and welcoming environment where first-generation college students can explore their cultural identities, celebrate their backgrounds, and connect with others who may share similar or different experiences. Through collaboration with the Cross-Cultural Center, students will be encouraged to reflect on the traditions, values, communities, and experiences that shape who they are. Creating personalized felt pennants will allow residents to express their identities in a meaningful and creative way while recognizing that everyone's cultural experience is unique. This program aims to strengthen cultural awareness, encourage self-expression, and foster a sense of belonging within the residential community and at Black Oak Hall.
