About
The Oregon Humanities Center hosts weekly Work-in-Progress Talks to showcase the humanities research of its many fellows. This week, Micah Jones presents her research on "The Price of Freedom: Race, Consumption, and the Long Black Freedom Struggle, 1915-1970."
Jones's project is a history of consumerism and civil rights activism in the Jim Crow South. She documents the discrimination Black shoppers faced in white-owned stores, and how they protested these practices. She also tracks how broader changes in the retail industry impacted Black consumers, in particular. For Black southerners, securing their civil rights was not enough. True freedom necessitated full and equal access to all realms of public life, from the polls to the produce aisle.
Join us for this Work-in-Progress Talk in the OHC Conference Room (Prince Lucien Campbell Hall 159) at noon on Fridays. These events are free and open to the public. Please register for this event online at ohc.uoregon.edu.
