About
Join us to learn from Ethics Fellow Pamela Chaddon, Finance and HR Professional in the Visual and Performing Arts Department, about “The Ethics of Cultural Memory: Who Decides What Music Is Remembered?”
Description: What we choose to teach, perform, preserve, and promote determines what and whose music becomes part of our collective cultural memory. This project looks at the ethical questions behind how the Western classical music canon is shaped and how educators, performers, arts organizations, broadcasters, and increasingly, algorithms and digital platforms influence what music is taught, performed, recorded, funded, promoted, and preserved.
Students often encounter the classical canon as though it were simply a reflection of artistic merit. This project challenges that assumption by examining the historical, social, economic, and institutional forces that influence what becomes part of our cultural memory. Every inclusion and omission contributes to the musical history that future generations inherit.
Through a roundtable discussion, faculty, staff, students, and community members will consider the ethical responsibilities that come with making decisions about repertoire, curriculum, and artistic programming. While the project focuses on classical music, these questions apply across the arts. As technology and digital platforms play a growing role in the arts, we have an opportunity to think about how we can make choices thoughtfully and responsibly, and how the artistic choices we make today shape what is remembered tomorrow.

UCCS Ethics Initiative at the College of Business holds Ethics Roundtables that are workshops featuring faculty and staff who have been selected as Ethics Fellows. Roundtables are held throughout the academic year, and are open to all UCCS faculty, staff, Southern Colorado Ethics Consortium schools and interested students. This event provides an opportunity to share best practices, classroom experiences, subject specific course materials, and address specific concerns. Roundtables provide UCCS faculty and staff along with invited guests the opportunity to hear about how others teach ethics and implement principle-based ethics in their work or area of expertise.
