Title:Things you may not know about BEAM SPLITTERS
Speaker: Trey Porto/JQI, NIST
Event Details / Abstract:This presentation was inspired by a paper I stumbled upon a few years ago, titled "Programming balanced optical beam splitters in white paint", which contained several concepts I hadn't known, and some interesting ideas that I think could be extremely useful in numerous optical applications. The talk starts with a review of simple beam splitters and the fundamental constraints that lead to the Hong-Ou-Mandel effect. Then I will discuss the results of several papers that developed programmable optical beam splitters in random scattering environments and demonstrated their functionality. Along the way I will note some counter-intuitive (at leas to me) observations about the fundamental behavior of beam splitters.
