About
How could ethnographic fieldwork training center the fact that researchers’ lives, in their full complexity, shape knowledge production? Neoliberal labor conditions, work-life balance, caring responsibilities, and recently Covid-19 have demanded a rethinking of fieldwork as a process that entails spending a year or longer in a faraway place. Many ethnographers have devised strategies to fit their fieldwork around intersecting responsibilities and constraints, a way of doing research that we call “patchwork ethnography.” This focus on the seamfulness of the labor conditions of research reveals the entanglements between “home” and “field,” data and daily life.
