Abstract: I will discuss my attempt to give a new proof of the necessity of Crawley-Boevey's criterion for the Deligne-Simpson problem. Given finitely many punctures on the projective line and prescribed conjugacy classes of monodromies around them, the problem asks for necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of an irreducible local system with these local monodromies. Successful proofs have already been given independently by Crawley-Boevey and Shu. My own approach contains a gap, which I will explain and put into perspective during the talk.
