About
The Linguistic Studies Program presents The Importance of Cross-Language Research in Psycholinguistics with Eszter Ronai from the Department of Linguistics at Northwestern University.
Abstract: Experimental studies of human language comprehension are known to be limited in their cross-linguistic coverage. In particular, a large proportion of studies focus on English or other Indo-European languages. In this talk, I present two case studies from Hungarian, a Uralic language that is under-represented within psycholinguistics – one focusing on the comprehension of grammatical structure, and one on the comprehension of discourse. Results show that Hungarian produces results that are critically different from English, providing an argument that experimental studies need to take into account the diversity of human languages.
