About
Bioethics and Bites is a new, free dinner event (November 12, 6 to 8 PM) that is open to the entire Rice community. Over a catered dinner from Aga’s, Rice students sit in small groups with professors, researchers, and bioethicists from Rice, Baylor College of Medicine, and the University of Houston, and talk with them directly about bioethics careers, research, and current issues. Five speakers are confirmed, and we expect 5 to 7 in total. Planned activities: 1. Small-group table dinners: Each speaker hosts a table of students, so every attendee gets real conversation time with a professional instead of listening to a lecture. 2. Guided discussion: Each table has placards with discussion questions on current bioethical issues to get conversations started. Students then steer the discussion toward their own interests. 3. Career and research sharing: Speakers describe their research and career paths, and students ask questions and make connections for future mentorship or research. Objectives: 1. Give about 50 Rice students direct access to bioethics professionals they would not otherwise meet 2. Help students explore bioethics as a field, including careers in medicine, law, research, and policy 3. Build a community of Rice students who can discuss difficult ethical questions thoughtfully Target audience: All Rice undergraduates, with no prior bioethics background needed. We expect particular interest from pre-med, pre-law, and humanities students.
