About
50-minute Workshop
Presenters: Enrique Ramirez-Homs, Lecturer, Developmental Math, Entering Student Experience Program
Generative AI literacy requires students to do more than complete assignments or experiment with emerging tools. They must demonstrate that they can apply, evaluate, revise, and transfer what they learn. This session presents the competency-based redesign of SCI 1301 - Inquiry in Math & Science, a core-curriculum course that uses generative AI literacy as its evolving content area.
The session will illustrate how the course shifted from activity completion and traditional grading toward clearly defined competencies, authentic performance tasks, revision opportunities, and portfolio evidence. Examples will show how students demonstrate mastery of prompt design, critical evaluation, ethical analysis, and responsible multimodal creation. The presenter will also share the course structure, assessment artifacts, enrollment context, student performance trends, completion rates, and qualitative student feedback.
Participants will explore a practical model for applying competency-based education to rapidly evolving subjects, such as GenAI literacy without designing a course around one platform or tool.
