About
50-minute Workshop
Presenters: David J. Carrejo, Associate Professor of STEM Education, Teacher Education/STEM Division
Generative artificial intelligence (AI) offers opportunities to enhance teaching and learning, but how can instructors use it to promote critical thinking rather than simple content generation? This interactive workshop introduces a structured approach to AI-enhanced course design grounded in constructive alignment, authentic assessment, and responsible AI practices. Drawing on an undergraduate teacher preparation course redesign and an IRB-approved Scholarship of Teaching and Learning study, participants will explore strategies for lesson planning, assignment development, formative assessment, and reflection.
Through guided examples, participants will develop an AI-enhanced learning activity for their own courses, practice writing and revising prompts, critically evaluate AI-generated responses, and design assessments requiring students to critique, improve, and justify AI-generated work. Emphasizing AI as a support for reasoning rather than a source of answers, the workshop provides adaptable templates, prompt guides, assessment resources, and an instructional framework that participants can implement across disciplines.
