About
The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications is currently accepting applications for its Ph.D. in mass communications and master’s of science degree in media studies programs.
Learn more about the program at the Nov. 13, 2026 Media Studies/Ph.D. Program Virtual Open House events, please click the link to register.
Designed for students with a master’s degree, our Ph.D. in mass communications is a four-year, fully-funded program designed to train scholars who are capable of conducting original research, creating new knowledge and disseminating their work through publications, presentations and their teaching. The program is interdisciplinary, with students collaborating with faculty and taking coursework both inside and outside the Newhouse School to develop their expertise and chart their career goals.
Media studies is an excellent foundation for doctoral study or for research-oriented jobs in the private or public sector. As a Newhouse media studies student, you will, through investigation of contemporary media systems and processes, assess the media’s relationship with the world.
The Newhouse School believes that academic success is grounded in student well-being, community, collaboration, and inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility. Join us to hear from current faculty and students regarding their experience with our programs.
For information on the Ph.D. or media studies program, contact Kristen Northrop (kmnorthr@syr.edu).
