About
Please join the Department of Physics in welcoming Samuel Schwab, Research Physicist at Air Force Research Laboratory, for his talk titled, "How to connect quantum computers."
Sam is a research physicist at the Air Force Research Laboratory where he focuses on heterogeneous quantum networking, but more specifically on quantum transduction. He received is Ph.D. in Physics from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio in 2022 and a B.S. in Physics and Philosophy from Balwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio.
Abstract: Quantum computers could be transformative for a number of applications (encryption, molecular/biological simulation, materials development, etc.), but the computers themselves need to be sufficiently large. The problems associated with scaling these systems depend on the modality of the compute (superconducting qubits, trapped ions, etc.). In this talk, I will briefly walk through the necessary building blocks for scaling one modality of quantum computer (superconducting), how one might connect it to other modalities, some of the ongoing work at AFRL along these lines, and the problems one encounters along the way.
