About
Thin film quantum matter: unconventional conventional superconductivity and more
In this presentation I will discuss recent oxide and intermetallic thin film materials we have grown in our lab, including an array of ultra-thin metals which display magnetic field-induced superconductivity, topological materials which are sufficiently clean to show the quantum Hall effect, and two-dimensional materials which display non-linear transport properties. I will take time to emphasize the correlations between the unique synthesis pathways these compounds take and the physics they display, with the goal of connecting an understanding of subtle structural and chemical distortions with the ability to resolve profound emergent electronic phases.
Bio: Joseph Falson is an assistant professor of applied physics and materials science at the California Institute of Technology. Prior to joining Caltech in 2020, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research studying the physics of two-dimensional electron systems. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo performing the synthesis and characterization of oxide-based high mobility heterostructures.
