About
Join the Pre-Optometry Organization (POAs) for an interactive, hands-on workshop designed to help students understand and prepare for the optometry school admissions process!
During this workshop, members will explore optometry school prerequisites, compare admission requirements across different programs, and learn how to build a competitive application. Students will also participate in activities to help them plan their academic coursework, prepare for the Optometry Admission Test (OAT), and identify opportunities for professional development.
Workshop Topics & Activities:
• Prerequisite Planning: Compare optometry school prerequisites with your current degree plan to identify any additional courses needed.
• Optometry School Research: Explore different optometry programs and identify school-specific admission requirements.
• OAT Preparation: Review the OAT's subject areas, explore study resources, and practice sample questions.
• Study Group Formation: Connect with fellow pre-optometry students to form study groups and prepare together.
• Letters of Recommendation: Learn how to build relationships with professors and optometrists and request strong recommendation letters.
• Shadowing Opportunities: Discuss how to contact optometrists, find shadowing opportunities, and gain clinical experience.
• Application Process: Explore OptomCAS, supplemental applications, application timelines, and registration requirements.
Members are encouraged to bring their laptops and current degree plans to participate in the activities.
Whether you're a first-year student exploring optometry or preparing to apply, this workshop will help you take the next steps toward becoming an optometrist!
